As a member of the Magic Circle and current UK President of the International Magicians Society it has been exciting finding ways to integrate these intertests into educational practice.
The MAGIC 4 LEARNING materials have been created to use conjuring not only as a useful metaphor for talking about the learning of new skills, but also as a tool for increasing learner confidence, improving gross motor skills and promoting communication skills. The programme itself is closely allied to PROJECT MAGIC which aims to use magic in a therapeutic setting.
CONJURE CREATE EDUCATE uses the Magic 4 Learning materials to actively engage pupils in a collaborative learning project. It has been used as part of the COPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) programme in two Cornish schools with very pleasing and positive results.
MATHEMAGIC CHALLENGE has been used for the last two years as part of the Gifted and Talented Marths Masterclass groups in Cornwall. The premise is very simple. Leaners are given the performance outlines for various mathemagical effects and are the tasked with discovering the mathematical principles underlying them.
Word Wizards is a Literacy Project using Magic and Famous Magicians to help develop literacy skills. It is being piloted in Camborne School in Cornwall,
Math-e-Matical Mages is the numeracy equivalent and the book Math-e-Magic supporting this scheme was published in June 2009 and is available from www.magic4learning.com
